Losing is a side of sports no one wants to talk about, but in volleyball, losing is a huge part of the game.
“My favorite part about volleyball is how fast of a sport it is. After a play you can just pick yourself up and think about doing good on the next play,” said senior Jesus Villalobos.
Because errors are prevalent in volleyball, the team’s capacity to move on quickly is the most crucial part of the game.
“When we lose I’m like, ‘oh we lost,’ and I move on pretty quickly,” said junior Mitchell
Sprecher.
Having the right mindset allows volleyball players to forget about the mistakes and look forward to the next point. FC’s boys volleyball team has this mindset when it comes to tough times.
“When we’re losing I try to just keep everyone’s energy up and help out where I can,” said senior Carson Mingus.
Effective teamwork and leadership are the foundations that keep a team competitive and cohesive.
“If we’re losing, our coach will call a time out to help us just reset and refocus our minds on the game,” said sophomore Esias Baker.
Coaches play a big role in every sport and volleyball is no different. Coaches give another perspective and guide the team to their victories. Floyd’s coaches help the team regroup so they can play their best.
“My favorite thing about our coaches is how nice they are and they are always happy to help us improve our volleyball skills,” said freshman Jay Sharma.

The supportive coaching staff helps the freshman team prepare for their season and understand the game better. They are teaching better strategies and mindsets to lead the team into success.
“Our keys to success are working together and communicating with one another,” said Sharma.
The team plays best when the players have effective communication and a deep, mutual understanding.
“Keys to the team’s success is the chemistry and not letting morale go down, especially in games. Our team’s chemistry is always there because we always have a good attitude towards each other and that helps our team play better,” said Villalobos.
Varsity focuses on the mental part of volleyball which allows them to apply it to their physical abilities. Volleyball is a mental game and being able to have a positive mindset affects the rest of a player’s potential.
“I think it’ll hopefully be better than last year. I know most of the teams are better than last year, but I think our hope is that we can come out with more victories than last year,” said Sprecher.
Another team goal for the boys volleyball team is to improve from last year and have a successful season. Make sure to support your Floyd Central Boys Volleyball team this year!
next point mindset
Mitchell:
It’s a team sport, so the goal is to work together. Just because you have one good player doesn’t mean you’re all good, so you all have to work together, but everyone has to do their part. You can’t just do it alone.
Carson:
“Our keys are passing and putting the ball in the court”
“I pepper with my brother outside of practice to get some more training in”
“The team dynamic is good, everyone gets along and everyone lifts each other up, sometimes when we get down by a lot we start getting in our heads and start playing bad”
“My favorite part about volleyball is all the friends I’ve made”
“We are all excited for the rest of the season and I hope we keep improving. If everyone listens and plays to their ability this season will be just fine”
Esias Baker:
“Practices start with us splitting between varsity and jv and doing fundamental drills. We start with hitting and then move to passing”
“Our keys to success is the first ball reception and making sure our hitters connection with the setter is there, so we can start our plays well”
“If we’re losing, our coach will call a time out to help us just reset and refocus our minds on the game”
“Our coaches help us learn to work better together and give us different ways to score”
Jay Sharma:
“ At practices we work on receiving and hitting”
“I train outside of practice with my friends sometimes”
“We try to calm down and lock in”
“Volleyball is really fun to play and has always been a hobby for me”
Jesus Villalobos
“Practices usually just consist of a lot of drills. A lot of serving and passing drills because that’s what we’re struggling with right now and then we move onto hitting”
“What we’re talking about right now is not having a bad attitude”
“Our teams chemistry is always there because we always have a good attitude towards each other and that helps our team play better”
“We just try to pick ourselves up and listen to the coach. When she’s done talking to us, we’ll talk to the people who seem to be struggling and tell them to go back out there and play their game”
“We just lost to Madison in 5 sets, and are hoping we can get back at them”
