Letters Policy
The Bagpiper welcomes letters from students, staff, parents, alumni, and community members. Letters to the editor offer readers an opportunity to express opinions, respond to published content, and engage in respectful dialogue about issues relevant to our school community.
Purpose
Letters to the editor exist to:

Encourage civic engagement and student voice

Promote thoughtful discussion of school and community issues

Provide a forum for diverse opinions
Publication of a letter does not imply endorsement by the student staff, adviser, school, or district.
Submission Guidelines
To be considered for publication, letters must meet the following requirements:

Be original and written by the individual submitting it

Be signed with the writer’s full name

Students must include grade level
-
Non-students must include a brief identifier (parent, alum, community member, etc.)

Include a valid email address or phone number for verification (not published)
-
Be 600 words or fewer, unless otherwise approved by the editors

Be submitted via the form here on fcstudentmedia.com or email to the editorial team and adviser at [email protected] and [email protected].
Anonymous letters will not be published.
Content Standards
Letters must adhere to accepted journalistic and ethical standards. The editorial staff will not publish letters that:

Contain libelous, false, or unsubstantiated claims

Include personal attacks, profanity, hate speech, or discriminatory language

Promote illegal activity or pose a threat to safety

Violate student privacy laws or school policies
-
Are primarily commercial, promotional, or fundraising in nature
Strong opinions are welcome; disrespect is not.
Editing Policy
The editorial staff reserves the right to:

Edit letters for length, clarity, grammar, and style, while preserving the writer’s intent

Reject letters that do not meet submission or content guidelines
-
Decline to publish letters that repeat previously published viewpoints without adding new perspective
Writers may be contacted for clarification or fact-checking prior to publication.
Frequency and Timeliness

Letters may be limited to one per person per publication cycle

Priority may be given to letters responding to recently published articles or current issues
Publication
Accepted letters will be published at the discretion of the editorial staff and may appear in print, online, or both.
